What is y’all favorite call?

I love turkey calls. Box calls, pot calls, glass calls, mouth calls…It doesn’t matter what kind as long as they make those sweet turkey sounds. To me, they are like musical instruments. Each one has a unique sound and you may have a favorite that always finds its way into your vest, kinda like Willie Nelson has Trigger, his trusted guitar. Shockingly, some people (AKA crazy folks!), are not of his music. Sorta like some turkeys (AKA stubborn old toms) are not a fan of certain calls some of the time. I like to carry a mouth call, box call and slate call, as you never know what is going to get a bird to answer. Remember, variety matters when in the turkey woods, but I have found the diaphragm call to be the most consistent and it has other advantages, too.

Along with the versatility to make any and all notes of the wild turkey, the mouth call requires no hands. This is a big deal for me. I like to run-and-gun in the woods and I can easily walk and call at the same time while chasing those timber roosters. A diaphragm call really shines when you are the caller and the shooter because you can talk that turkey right to the gun and stay still until your shotgun has the last word. For this reason alone, a mouth call is worth its weight in gold, but they are actually inexpensive.

I know some hunters are intimidated to pick up a mouth call. They think it is too hard to learn the skill. But, with all the instructional videos from Flextone and the low cost, there are no excuses anymore. You don’t have to be like the competitive callers you see on TV. Heck, you should know from hearing live turkeys in the woods that there is no perfect sounding turkey language. Anyone can learn to use one well enough to kill a few birds, and they are affordable enough to buy a few to try out before you find the one you like best.

We all have our preferences. Hank Jr. is a guitar man and Metallica’s Lars Ulrich is a drummer. Still, sometimes we need to put down the calls we are fond of because the turkeys just ain’t fans, but when I can get away with it, a mouth call is my pick.

Is there a call you favor because you like the sound more or are talented at using it? Holler at me on Facebook and let me know your go-to call and why it is your darling. Post your comments and we'll see what most people like.
